Listers and Gentlemen!

Well before embarking on a 1930's original paint bike project and in conjunction with assembling the usually shiny bits and pieces, I'd like to locate a frame pump, so it can be looked at with an eye toward matching, coordinating, or even just brazenly standing out. Not sure which. My issue is the pin spacing. The spear point pins (definitely original) are 15.5 inches (about 39.4 cm) apart at the tips. I have looked at numerous pumps in all the logical places a newbie knows of, and have not seen one that fits this space. They are all substantially too long even when full compressed. What's the throbbing and capable CR brain have to offer for period correct inventory, insight, clues or sources on this diminutive pump opportunity?

Yes, it will have only one gear; fixed or free or flip-flop is undecided. I might or might not soak an old B-17 saddle, I don't know about brakes yet, nor if I'll refresh or repaint it and/or the pump. I'm unsure of how I would approach a tire (or is it tyre) remount - toward or from the valve. Any touchy On Topic subjects I didn't avoid? I have not seen ANY posts on indecision. But I did listen to Supertramp while attempting to grow up and do like Brian May, as he is one cool astrophysicist who plays the 6 string a bit. There I go - Off Topic, and even with a grin!

Well, let's hear it for the cottered crank ROOKIE. Thank you-Thank you!!

Used the ole pedal spindle with attaching vice grips and a hammer. PRESTO!

After I got all the icky stuff off with steel wool I discovered a Stronglight spindle inside Campy cups.

Not just any spindle, but a 136+ spindle.

Whoa. The longest spindle I have is 127 at best.

IS THIS RIGHT? WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?

Feel free to ridicule!

At least now I can further along the re-plating concerns.

Hi listers,

I've just noticed the jockey wheels on the 'patent no date' Nuovo Record rear gear that came with my Bianchi Specialissima [which is almost ready for paint.......thanks to all who offered advice] ............as only 9 teeth, instead of the normal 10 teeth, also they have no markings on them!

I do seem to remember reading somewhere that the early rear gears did have 9 teeth.....incidently mine have cracked like so many others.......though saying that, out of the 9 Nuovo Record gears I've got this is the only one with the dreaded cracks!

Anyone else come accross 9 tooth Nuovo Record jockey wheels?......or have I got missmatched ones in my gear?

All,

Campagnolo made a steel cottered chainset in the '50's. I used to own one at that time.

I'd never noticed that these existed, but they're in the catalog...

eBay item 200403311035

NOS from 1958.? Probably pretty scarce, and maybe a great (albeit expensive) source of parts if you're trying to piece together another BB from that era with bad cups and races.

Not mine.? No known relation.? Blah, blah, blah.

So, what crankset would this part have been paired with, anyway?

Robert,

Go to http://www.eastwood.com they have a large selection of rust eliminating products, and, they work!

Thanks

The brake adjusters on my seventies Nuovo Record brakes are rusted solid. And I'm trying to save as many of the original parts on this colnago as I can. I need a front and rear set of adjusters as a replacement.

Any out there? I have the o-rings, so I just need the adjusters...slight rust is fine, they shouldn't be NOS.

I salvaged some frozen barrel adjusters (they were in Excellent condition and shiny, but frozen) as follows :

(1) I removed the O-rings and clamped the round nuts in my panavise which has plastic jaws.

(2) I used a safety pin to dig out the rust from the barrel adjusters.

(3) I gently rocked them back and forth and sprayed them with WD-40 and/or soaked them in evapo-rust. I was able to free the adjusters, with great patience (maybe 15 mins total over a period of days.) Don't underestimate the benfit of digging out the rust with a safety pin, that really helped the most !!

Really???? I have only ever seen it once on Ebay, for 4 figure about, and looked prototype. Has anyone else. The campy cottered BB came out the same time that Campagnolo introduced the Cotterless Record cranks. I thought the cottered BB was for Magistroni or FB cranks. that is why there has never been Campy steel cottered cranks in any catalogs.

any experts out there to disprove me.

I don't think you'll lose points on the concours for trivalent chrome vs. hexavalent chrome, as nobody can tell the difference. Hexavalent chrome is a known carcinogen (A lawsuit over Hexavalent Chrome poisoning made Erin Brockovich famous and garnered an Academy Award for Julia Roberts in 2000.)

Since hexavalent chrome has been outlawed by the EPA, I strongly suggest you go with your local, trivalent chrome plater in restoring your Chater Lea cranks.

Message: 11 Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 15:20:16 -0800 All,

AFAIK, the difference was the flat versus sloping fork crown as noted, & hence a significant price difference back in the day. Our LBS--Ace Cycles in Vancouver--was importing Cinelli's (directly I think) and I remember seeing the "A" frames and lusting after them.

I first raced on an early 60s (I think) "B" that was a wonderful ride, but I really wanted an "A" frame...

I'm not sure if there was any difference in geometry or other aspects.
