CRers,

Though many like to question Shimano's thinking in the 70's and 80's, I have always found their higher end kit to be both very well thought out and outstanding in performance. For me, almost without exception better than a certain Italian brand. The early Deore touring group had some very nice pieces in it. Shifting, at least in the Half-Step plus granny mode, was great.

As for the "Flexiness" of the crank/rings, when I used this setup more often, I was around 170# pushing a loaded touring bike with WAY to much gear on it. Never an issue with flex. Not exactly doing out of the saddle sprints with it either though.....

Jerry- This crank was one of those "what were they thinking" creations. So typical to Shimano is the almost interchangeable but not quite design. Additionally IIRC the rings were real flexi under hard pedaling. (Not that at 140lbs I worry too much about flex).
