Subject: [CR] Damaged headset race

When one notices that a race is damaged, what is the best advise if cost is a factor and one wants to keep the original part in place? I just finished a fixie conversion of an old Von Shauff German made bike. I'm keeping the Campy derailleurs and shifter levers to sell on ebay. I bought the bike for $65 bucks and if I have to replace the headset now there will be meager profit off the bike even considering the $100 or so I'll make from the sale of the excess parts. These are the little projects which make me feel less guilty about my compulsion to buy, overhaul and then flip for a little profit.

In order to get rid of slop in the headset adjustment, I finally settled on leaving the headset a bit on the tight side ... not binding but pretty tight. Was this the best compromise?
