George,

The AX braze-on front derailleur does indeed use a unique braze-on tab. You can see a photo of the tab in this catalog page on the late Sheldon Brown's web-site: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano1982/pages/13.html

And a bit more info here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano1982/pages/06.html

I have a 1981 Lotus Super Pro Aero that is full AX. http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/David-G-Whites-Bikes/1981+Lotus/ (mapped)

A couple photos of the front derailleur and its cable routing here: http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/David-G-Whites-Bikes/1981+Lotus/004.jpg.html (mapped) http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/David-G-Whites-Bikes/1981+Lotus/009.jpg.html (mapped)

Be sure to click on the photos to get the large size so you can see more detail.

I'd love to see photos of your Melton. Are they posted somewhere?

Best,

David
