FWIW, based on my unscientific sampling of randonneur bikes at PBP in 1999, 2003, 2007 the majority of the constructuer crafted bikes that used dynamo style lighting, and that looked to have been made from at the end of the 70's until recent times, used Bottom Bracket dynamos. It is to be noted that all of these bikes also had fenders. It suggests that Bottom Bracket Dynamos aren't quite as faulty as some may conclude from recent posts.
Battery lighting still was more extensively used at PBP than dynamo lighting. Ditto for most Northern California PBP qualifying event participants.
