Is the ALAN Italian thread? That would give a little more clearance. That said, I haven't run into that problem here. I just dug up my old "Grip" unit and managed to slide it into 3 BB shells: Takahashi, Cinelli, and Henry James (all English thread) without trouble.

But if you refer to the cup close-up on VeloBase (http://www.velobase.com/CompImages/BottomBrackets/DDA8D70F-6245-4A51-B8B9-315958CE9F87.jpeg), you can see that the inside of the cup is stamped "BSA". Perhaps the eccentric cups were available in different diameters to accommodate different shell diameters?
