Yes, Don was quite a man... Amazingly competent at anything he attempted. He was a bicycle frame builder too (I don't think he made many though) One of his frames was pictured in a bicycling book, was it Bike Tripping by Tom Cuthbertson? (who passed away in 2005 at age 60 of cancer...)
