I know it sounds ridiculous but I frankly think 27" wheels look cooler than 700c wheels! There is something appealing about a bike with really big imposing wheels, and 27" wheels dominate the looks of the frame like no other!! So, I can imagine that 27" wheels survive to some extent, on aesthetics in addition to backwards compatability reasons ...
