My father's brother emigrated from Germany (Chemnitz) to Buenos Aires i=
n the late 30s, and still lives there. His career was (mostly) in industria=
l air conditioning. Argentina is an interesting scale: large enough for a d=
omestic market that justifies local manufacturing (and a long history of ta=
riffs to encourage it), but small enough not to support a lot of R&D. I=
n addition, Argentina and Chile are much more "European" in outlook than mo=
st Latin American countries. When we were there in the 70s, there were dail=
y newspapers in Italian, English, German, and who knows what other language=
s (in addition to Spanish, of course). So, much industrial "Intellect=
ual Property" was manufactured under license from European firms - took car=
e of the R&D issue, and had cachet. I would suspect that some gre=
at entrepreneur figured that he could make a living selling locally made bu=
t licensed Frejus. But didn't last past the next round of inflation or rece=
ssion.

That's my guess, and I'm sticking with it. :-)
harvey sach=
