I have what looks like a beat-up original nipple in my 1951 Claud frame. The thread in the BB looks remarkably close to a 10-32, but it's not, although you could probably re-tap it or force a 10-32 screw in there to fill the hole. The nipple looks smaller than a standard 1/4-28 one you can buy at any auto parts store.

The one you want is the staight 2BA one at the bottom. These are cheaper than those Ray Etherton has on eBay, although I have to admit that Ray's look exactly like the one I have, while British Tools and Fastenets only shows stock illustrations of modern ones.
