Bruce - Some anecdotal evidence: When I rode across the US in 1976, one of the guys in my group rode a French thread hub with English freewheel, and it worked ok until we got to the steep hills of the Appalachians. Then he stripped the threads off the hub and had to replace it. He was towing a trailer though so that is an extreme use. Then in 1982 riding in the Lakes District in England, we met a couple on a tandem who had a Maxicar brake hub. Said they had ridden through the Lakes Dist (where some of the hills are marked 1 in 3) the year before and stripped the threads off the hub, and then replaced it and were heading back to see if they could do it again. Also extreme use. Take your chances I guess!
