I always liked half-step + granny as well. My first triple was a Stronglight 99 crank set up 50-45-28, with a 14-28 freewheel in the back. I was working in a shop when the Duopar derailleur was introduced, so I bought the "Eco" version when it became available. I'm still using that derailleur on my commuter bike 30+ years later...
