There are actually quite a few frames that are actual gold plating, The cromovelato effect is far more practical probably; but if done properly, real gold plating does work. One problem is that most gold plating tanks are quite small. Too small for plating frames.

In my experience, all gold-plate-looking framesets are actually gold lacquer over chrome ( Rampar Superbe, Raleigh Anniversary, Wilier Triestina, ... )

You could find a very inconspicuous place - maybe between the chainstays, near the tire - and then rub some lacquer thinner over it to remove the lacquer, exposing the chrome.
