Shimano chains are probably the best value in the lower price ranges (HG50/HG70) I haven't had problems reusing the normal rivets, or chain locks (Sram "powerlink"/KMC ..) on Shimano chains.

The quality of Sachs/Sedis/Sram chains seems to have deteriorated with Sram ownership. Similarly priced Sram chains, look rougher and don't last as long as the Sachs PC 51 used to.

Options for European chains include Rohloff (who reputedly made some off-topic Campag chains) and Wippermann.

Most modern derailleur chains probably shift better than Sedis, due to their modified sideplates. Modern 3/32 single speed/hub gear chains may be a cosmetic and functional equivalent to Sedis.
