I've heard the argument that Campagnolo didn't make touring components because Italians don't tour on bikes. Its a reasonable explanation ... but plain stupid business practice.

Not many Japanese tour on bikes (relative to the population) but the depth and breadth of bicycle parts in Japan has always been astounding. What you saw in the states (in the CR timeline) is a fraction of what was available in Japan.

Japanese component makers sought to expand their markets by constantly improving their products and widening their offerings. Its no accident that they came up with workable indexed shifting, cheap seals around their bearings, affordable high end components, etc., etc.

Its a miracle that Campagnolo servived despite offering yesterday's technology for years and years.
