I agree with Kevin in his post that a good set of wheels can make a big difference. I think investing in a good set of wheels can make a mediocre frame ride decently.

On another note, has anyone ever had any experience in using a conventional short cage on a rally derailleur? I have an extra Rally and thought about using a short cage to see if it shifts better than a record. What do the cognoscenti think? Is it heresy or a reasonable idea.
