Subject: [CR] Spring inside Nuovo Tip QR?

I just received a wheelset with a Campagnolo Record hub, but a Nuovo Tip qr. The lever did not want to stay closed, and I almost succumbed to the temptation to just leave it open, and tighten it down like a wingnut. I decided to open the qr up to see if there was anything that might explain this. I pried off the circlip, pleased that I did not drop it, because it would have then been lost forever on my basement floor. I removed the lever, pulled the dome off the skewer, and found a spring. This explained why the qr had acted as if being closed was a condition to be resisted. My first thought was that someone had taken the skewer apart before, and really screwed up on the reassembly. However the spring looked a little different than the usual springs one finds in qrs (or throws away if one follows Ted Ernst's advice). It was shaped like a qr spring, but it was round in cross-section rather than flat.

I went to the computer and found Campagnolo Catalog 17. Lo and behold there is supposed to be a spring inside the qr dome on Nuovo Tipo hubs. Here's the page. It is part number 1304: conical tension spring

There is no spring like that inside Record hub qrs. Why is the spring here on the Tipos? It seems to me that it is doing exactly the opposite of what I want: it is trying to open the qr when I want it closed. Has anybody experienced this? I'm tempted to reassemble without the spring, but I have to assume it was put there for a reason. What gives?
