This is a question I ask myself a lot.  I'm of the Kevin K. school of thought, although my '53 Dawes doesn't get much use. (Maybe it's destined for another owner?)  Museum pieces should be in museums.

Rides: Motobecane Grand Jubilee Bridgestone RB-T late 90's Bianchi Eros Austro-Daimler Olympian 650B conversion 78 Trek 710 Dawes Double Blue (rain bike) 72 Raleigh Pro 99 Milano (Masi) steel Wing ("filed" 3V) late 70's GT Karakoram MTB (shopping bike) 40's Drysdale track bike 79 Bianchi Rekord 748 72 Raliegh Internation, (made French by Paul Raley) GT Zaskar (alum. MTB, with ridgid steel fork) Raleigh Super Course Mixte early 80's LeMaire (currently disassembled)

Curently building a Dawes galaxy 3-sp fixed gear bike, which I plan to ride.

I find that riding these in casual rotation reduces extends maintenance times nicely.
