Hello Mark. The Avocet products that I have used have been substandard. In the 80s they sold a Poly Pro cycling short that would sag and lose shape and if that wasnt bad enough - after and during a ride they would just become so foul. The Avocet Computer. They would constantly fail, I exchanged mine many, many times. Ultimately, the solution was to put a small wad of toilet tissue between the battery and its cover, this seemed to extend the life of the things. Although I never used an Avocet Crank, I remember on more than one occassion consumers complaining to the staff at Palo Alto Bike Shop about the rings warping. They also had a plastic pedal. My friend had a set and one blew up during a ride thru Niles Canyon. The Avocet seatpost was (I think) made by a company called STM, they had a ram (Ibex?) as a mascott.
I dont think GPM made stuff for Avocet, (They did make a firstclass tandem Crankset though). To Avocets credit, while I was serving time as president of my local bike club, an Avocet engineer gave me a bunch of prototype saddles for members of our club to test- very cool. Thanks for the memories. Dave Martinez
