I thought I'd forward this further suggestion to the list as I think it is a very good idea which I failed to include in my suggestions. I might add, as Sheldon has commented on his web site, that modern brakes pads can often improve the performance of classic brakes even if the original pads are in good condition.

I also recommend checking the brake blocks. If they are hard then replace them with
modern types that work.
