Have you ever been to Seattle? Fixed-gears and multiple large steep hills cause knee problems--ask any joint doctor or ex-messenger in Seattle or S.F. I now ride a fixed (48-20) on a 25 mile round trip commute each day, but the hills are much less here. The actual problem comes in from going from 70rpm to 200rpm in 10 feet or the other way around. Fixed-gears are wonderful things used in moderation; they improve your fitness, spin, and bike handling all at the same time.
>"Monkeyman" ? Not that I really mind, but I think our noble moderator and
>list-owner has asked we identify ourselves in each post with true name and
>general location ?

Who said my name wasn't Monkeyman? I am who I am and have been monkeyman on-line since 1988, so if you want to find "me" you need to look for monkeyman, not Brandon Todd Ives. My mom calls me "monkeyson," my wife "monkeyboy," my brother and sister's siblings "monkeybro." 90% of the people on the list have known me from other places as "monkeyman." I ask you, what is my "true name"? I've never heard the "true name" thing before, but I can understand from a standpoint of people hiding behind non-"true names" and spreading chaos and evil about the list without being responsible for the repercussions. In the non-AOL online world, having a pseudonym is standard for throwing off SPAMers and ease of communication between friends. Many people are known by their log name-- like list-owner Dale is "oroboyz." I could go on and on on the subject, but maybe I've been on-line too long and know all the bad that comes from having too much information floating in the ether.

Lastly, for those of you who are keeping track. Right now I live in Goleta, California--it's a suburb of Santa Barbara about 100 north of L.A. In the last couple years I've lived in Eugene and Portland, Oregon; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Bloomington, Indiana, and Seattle, Washington.

enjoy, Brandon Todd Ives A.K.A monkeyman Goleta, CA roughly 119' 50"W- 34' 30"N, elevation 20 feet
