I think that was what I way trying to say, Gilbert, but you said it much better. Bicycles in general are amazing machines, and even those we look upon as "junk" can work amazingly well if properly assembled and adjusted. The problem, of course, is that those K-Mart specials are almost never properly assembled and adjusted, and the folks who buy at K-Mart will probably never take it to a proper bike shop and pay the price of a tuneup. I've overhauled cheap bikes for friends and been rather proud of how well I could make them run. One of my favorite parts of "Breaking Away" is when our hero is presented with the official AMF Roadmaster, certainly infinitely more humble than his beloved California Masi, and utters "What crap!", or words to that effect. Yet after several hours of lubricating, adjusting, tuning and truing, the standard issue iron is running quite nicely, thank you, said adjustments no doubt contributing the the eventual triumph of our hero and his mates over the cosmetically impeccable but mechanically challenged frat boys.
