Subject: [Classicrendezvous] Help Needed with AX stuff

I've been collecting, mostly by purcase/trade from various list members, Dura Ace AX components to build up an aero tubed Japanese Ompax frame I got from Dale, hope to bring it to Cirque next spring. Now I have to correct my considerable ignorance about how to install and adjust this rather unique stuff, The only AX stuff I used in the past was the AX rear derailleur I had on my 1973 Windsor Pro from the early 80's until I restored the original NR a couple of years ago. An I didn't even have this set up to use the indexing of which I now think it is capable. Responses to the following questions about AX would be greatly appreciated. Respond off list, or on list if you think the info would be of general interest to list members.

How does one set up the indexing that seems built into the rear derailleur?

Do I have to find an AX cassette, or will other Shimano cassettes work wih AX hubs?

If so, must I find a Shimano 6 or 7 speed cassette or will an 8 speed work?

If I use an 8 speed, will it work with the indexing?

It appears all spokes exit the hub on the same side of the flange on these hubs. Other than recognizing that, any special advise about building up these hubs?

Anyone know of any replacement pads that will fit these brakes?

Thanks in advance.
