Hello All. Back in the earlier part of this year, I got a call from a collector who was in the process of selling off some of his bikes. We cut a deal for a 1964 Frejus TDF (19") and a 1962 Legnano Gran Premio (22 1/2"). I have been looking for a Legnano for many years and have had my share of near misses and regretably turning afew down due to minor flaws. What attracted me to this Legnano was of course the distinctive green and white color combination and the very inspirational cast headtube badge. But this ones a Gran Premio, right? second tier, B grade - for us spoiled Americans? It was not the sought after Mod. Roma Olimpiade. This specific example had very few miles on it and looks as though it just sat in a temperature controlled garage for 38 years. The GP was all original with decomposing Pirellis, white plastic handlebar tape with matching universal hoods. The brake cable housings even match the color of the frame! Unfortunately, the leather Italia saddle was loved to death with neets foot oil and disinegrated when I sat on it - ouch! I replaced it with a modern black Brooks B-17 which looks excellent. The componentry is an eclectic blend of Italian bicycle parts manufactuering might circa early 60s. Campag Record LF Hubs (Legnano engraved), Gran Sport F& R derailleurs w/ D.T. Shifters W/ umbrella clamp. Magistroni Crankset (Legnano) and HS. Ambrosio Bar (Legnano) and Stem. Universal mod 61 CP, Fiamme green label rims and Sheffield (I think) Pedals (Legnano). The whole package looks very tidy with green maintubes, white headtube and seattube panels red box lining adds to the overall effect. Chrome lugs, crown and tips complete the package.
How does it ride? I have to admit I was bias, I expected a dead ride
with a posible "gas pipe" frame. It only took afew miles to realize that this
bike fits, rides and responds fantasic! It is not only soild under climbs but
tracks beatufully thru curves and doesnt beat you up on these terrible East
Bay roads. So, I am riding along with the new Clements on singing "Volare".
My friend tells me that some times he feels like Coppi when he rides his 50s
Bianchi (from Reparto Corsa). He asks me if I feel like Bartali. I feel like
a Gargario (sp), one of his men.
Best Wishes.
Dave Martinez.
