I have some ideas on this. Rohloff hubs use a gear oil that can be purchased separately. Once for warm weather and one for cold. This would work very well. I think you would want to use a thin transmission gear oil for motorcycles or something like a full synthetic like Mobil One which would be my second choice. I would stay away from automatic transmission oils as they contain detergents you don't need and are formulated to shift a transmission by using fluid pressure and don't have to deal with the shearing action of gears.
