Subject: [Classicrendezvous] Re: Speaking of Japanese collectors

Well, there is a flow of vintage-type stuff in this direction, including the Toyo-made Rivendell Atlantis. I was at first skeptical of this bike, thinking Grant had diluted his image by using too many different framebuilders, but everyone who has actually seen these seems to rave about them. That plus the Nitto stuff, the spectacular Toei frames (and by the way Minoura makes the only handlebar cage mounts I know of that are still in production) leads me to believe the appreciation for vintage type bikes is as great in Japan as anywhere in the world. If we can overcome the barriers of language and greatly different commercial systems that separate us, I think greater communication between classic bike fans in Japan, Europe and America can benefit us all. After all, while there are lots of porblems with the internet, its great virtue is in breaking down barriers.

I think the flow of somewhat rare classic components will continue to be one way as long as Japanese collectors continue to be willing to pay much higher prices, but that could change if those collectors gain knowledge of and access to more economical sources.

Regards,

Jerry Moos
