We'd leave the space between the two spokes directly opposite the valve glue-free (this was back when we used 365 hole wheels, so it wasn't very long). That gave an easy-to-find spot where one could start removing the tire, but it was short enough that a well-inflated tire didn't mind the gap in cornering.
