I would advise reading Giant and the File with a huge dose of scepticism. It is full of very nice little stories which were written through rather strong rose tinted spectacles. And which cannot be relied upon unfortunately. For example the story of Tullio Campagnolo pulling out a file and converting Alfredo Binda's bike to take the Campagnolo gear on the spot. It would seem to be highly unlikely the dropouts of the time were so thin that they could hardly stand the forming of teeth and the difficulty of aligning teeth on both dropouts perfectly which is essential for the gear to work correctly seems beyond any ordinary mortal. And the story of how Robic won the 1947 Tour de France does not accord with other accounts. It suggests that Robic was paced up by a press motorcycle. No other historian that I can find agrees with this extremely partisan account in which it is alleged that the two Italian riders were cheated out of their winning positions. So just be careful what you believe. Hilary Stone
