David -

My understanding was always that the measurement was taken from the center of the mounting/pivot bolt to the center of the pad, which is how it's discussed in an article in the latest Rivendell Reader. There, a comparison of a Campagnolo NR standard (or long) reach caliper and a Dia Compe short reach lists the range of the Campy as 47mm to 56mm and the Dia Compe as 39mm to 49mm. My experience is that all calipers (both standard and short reach) are not created equally range-wise, so careful measurement and comparison are always good practices.

I heard the terms for brakes (short reach, long reach) and the measurements given for each, but I was wondering where the measurements are taken from. Would that be from pivot to center of pad., or elsewhere?
