I saw this bike at a museum and am curious how it worked....perhaps some of you could enlighten me. It has two cranks, the right set at a lower gear ratio hooked up to what looks like a freewheel. The left crack was at a higher gear and was hooked up to the cog and lockring. It can see this set up working at higher speeds where the right crank freewheels. But at low speeds how could the lower gear be used for acceleration? I assume that as soon at the rear wheel started spinning, the crank rotation rate was fed back through the fixed gear side. So, what was the benefit of this set up? Or do I have the mechanics wrong?
