Ron- It sounds as though the hubs you have are Campy Nuovo Tipo. The front bearings and cones are not the same size, and the number of balls used is different. Also, I believe that the quality of the front (and rear) cones are different on N. Tipo. It seems to me that the distinguishing characteristic is that the N. Tipo cones are silver and the Record cones have a blackish finish. Are the Record cones heat treated?

For N. Tipo- the front bearings are qty 10 per side, and the size is 3/16" For Record- the front bearings are qty 9 per side and the size is 7/23"

On the rear hub, the size and number of balls is the same for both Record and N. Tipo, (qty 9 per side, 1/4") but the cone is different in quality as stated above.

Classicists:

I have 3 questions relating to the early 70s Falcon restoration I'm working on. The bike came to me with a mix of components--Universal 61 brakes, zeus seatpost, Campy NR drivetrain, Sugino mighty crank. At first I thought of making it all Campy (since the importer assembled them in various configurations there's no "original" spec.) but the brake reach is too long for regular reach campy sidepulls, so I've decided to stick with the Universals (which have polished up very nicely). This leads to question #1

#1 If I use campy levers (nicer looking) with the Universal calipers how will the braking action be affected? I know someone submitted a table a while ago listing how much cable various levers pulled, but I neglected to copy it. Please forgive the repetition.

#2 The bike came with nice high flange campy hubs with the wing logo, no oil ports, and round holes in the flanges. What model are these? Tipo? Do they take the same bearing size and number as record hubs?

#3 The bike came with Weinmann (engraved) 27x1 1/4 touring rims. But they have red and gold foil Mavic stickers on them. Assuming someone added the stickers to make the rims look more "high end" I was planning to remove them. But I thought I should check first to make sure these weren't made by Weinmann for Mavic and relabeled.

Thanks in advance
