After some date in the late 60s, as I recall it, the Columbus tubing of the classic era was readily identified by looking down the steerer tube. It had a few spiral ridges that stuck up and were supposed to reinforce the tube.

In the bikes I've examined, a very small sample, the Columbus "bird" logo was stamped into the down tube, a couple of inches below the head lug, and generally faced up. This was done to identify the short butted end, so it would not be cut -- everything was to be taken from the other end.

Would I scrape mine to get the bird? Not if I had a Windsor! harvey
