I remember seeing these rods on the saddle at a motorpace race in Cologne many years ago. A really nice nostalgic evening of speed and smoke - from stogies and two-strokes. The event was in conjunction with the IFMA trade and consumer show. Very ill-attended race, although the show was packed.

Anyway, they said that the demi-fond (stayers)racers take real toll on the bikes. The speed and shaking onnthe high pressure tubs on wavy boards can separate the men from the..... from their shorts! We actually saw some shorts worn to the chamois. There were also some machines equipped wit braces from the bars to the head locknut or to the fork crown. If memory serves, I think these were the real thing with 24" front wheels and reversed forks.
