I figured that last comment would get some response. Phil Wood products are, in my limited experience with them, and by reputation, excellent. I would say the same for King headsets, and a handfull of other products. Sadly, much of the componentry made here is just not that great, having been made by post MTB-boom start-ups. It seems you can buy some CNC tools and hang out a shingle and call yourself a component company. The shingle should say, "Hey, we're not Shimano." That seems to have a lot of appeal to MTB enthusiasts, at least it did when I last worked in a shop (1995).
