With other annular (cartridge) bearing hubs it is sometimes possible to do the same with a very thin washer under a dustcap or similar. With Harden hubs from 1940s/50s which use cartridge bearing a thin shim washer under the dustcap introduces a slight side load which will remove the play and as with the Mavic hubs does not seem to speed up the wear mine have done about 5000 miles since a thin shim washer was added and the bearings still feel as smooth as ever.
