Mavic basically apply a very small side load to the bearings to remove the
play. Theoretically this should wear the bearings fast in practice it does
not appear to do so. With other annular (cartridge) bearing hubs it is
sometimes possible to do the same with a very thin washer under a dustcap or
similar. With Harden hubs from 1940s/50s which use cartridge bearing a thin
shim washer under the dustcap introduces a slight side load which will
remove the play and as with the Mavic hubs does not seem to speed up the
wear mine have done about 5000 miles since a thin shim washer was added
and the bearings still feel as smooth as ever.
