Dale and all,

The upright utility bikes are hard to classify. Ones lightweight 1950's English club bike is often described as a Utility bike in American press.

There is little doubt that a late 1970's Raleigh Sport 3 speed utility bike with minor modifications was similar to a club bike in or from Britain in the mid 1950's and was used for cross continent tours, brisk club rides and time trials then and for many years later. Of course 531 constructed lightweights are owned by many people on the list and lots were equipped with Sturmey AW hubs but they seem to be rare in this country. Perhaps rare in Britain also.

Perhaps Hilary Stone or Bob Reid can weigh in the their perspective.
