Subject: [CR]Trek 720 for sale, 65 cm (25.5 in)

Well, time for spring cleaning of the garage. I wanted to give the CR list first shot at my Trek. I'm selling because I've just acquired a Cirrus 7 touring bike, I don't need two and the Cirrus fits me better.

Bike is a mildly modified Trek 720 touring model, circa 1985 or thereabouts. I bought it from Velocipede Peddler in East Lansing Michigan in '87 where it had been sitting around for a while, due to the large frame size.

Frame Specifics: Reynolds 531C double butted throughout, 25.5 inch seat tube (C-T), 18 inch chainstays, 126 mm rear spacing, 23 inch (c-c) top tube, 42.5 inch wheel base, relaxed angles, very comfortable ride. Not a criterium weapon due to the tubing and relaxed geometry but definitely an excellent all day cruiser. Color is dark maroon metallic with gold decals. Frame construction is lugged and brazed with a semi sloping fork crown. Very high quality production lug work. Uses the Trek socketed seat lug assembly (where the seat stays plug directly into cast sockets on the seat lug, ala Herons). No chrome but plentiful braze ons (three sets bottle bosses, DT shifter bosses, pump peg, low rider bosses, seat stay rack eyelets, under BB cable guides, brake cable guides, canti bosses, double drop out eyelets, and maybe some I forgot!).

Components: top level mid eighties friction touring gear. Shimano Deore 175mm cranks (pre lx, xt, xtr and other alphabet soup stuff) set up as a half step with 48-44-28 chainrings. Chainrings in very good condition. Shimano 525 SPD MTB double sided pedals with reflector platforms clipped to one side. Shimano Canti brakes (wide straddle design, they can rub panniers on the back if packs shoved all the way forward on the rack). Huret Duopar rear derailer. Simplex front derailer and retrofriction DT shifters (the tear drop shaped ones with the cutouts) (smooooth!). Gran Compe brake levers with cable tension adjusters. TTT bar and stem (44 cm bars and 11.5cm stem measured from the center of the bolt to center of bar clamp). Avocet gel racing saddle. Blackburn expedition style rear rack (may have been made for Trek as there is no provision for adjustment). Stronglight Spiedel headset.

Wheels: The original 27 inch unreliable Mailliard Helicomatic wheels have been replaced with period correct Campy record low flange hubs laced to Super Champion 58 rims (definitely a touring rim, can take giant tires) 36 double butted DT spokes front and rear. Rubber is currently an Avocet Cross 35 x 700 rear and a Specialized Expedition 35mm front. Tires have under 100 miles on them. The wheels work well with 28 cm tires if want to lighten the load; I rode this wheel set that way on another bike. Hubs very smooth. If you really want them, I think I still have the original Mailliard wheels and will include them in the sale. New Shimano 14-28 six speed freewheel.

Condition: Pretty good, considering the age. The bike has been used and shows the marks, but never left out in the rain, abused or crashed. Componentry is all in excellent functional state. Paint and decals have some small scuffs and scratches but does not need refinishing unless you are a fanatic.

Photos: go to photopoint album at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u59634&a975149 . There's a full bike shot and two shots of the worst frame scuffs.

Price: Asking $400 with buyer to pay shipping. Good source of parts for a retro tourer if frame is too big.
