Well ... I have a decent income, but no time to ride ... M-F doing Tech Support for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter | Online (and for the San Francisco Bay Area, it really doesn't pay that well), supplemented by Sat-Sun working retail in a local bike shop (A Bicycle Odyssey, Sausalito, CA).

My saving grace is that until this past weekend, I had never bought a completely new component package to go with my frames. Every bike I've built up from a frame has used the same 8-speed Campagnolo Record/Chorus mix that I bought used in 1994, or other scrounged parts.

And while it's not classic yet, the Ron Cooper currently wears brand spankin' new Campagnolo Record 10-speed Ergopower.

The Waterford-built Rivendell is hanging in a garage awaiting the same 8-speed Record group that it had worn from 1996-1997.

The Waterford-built Rivendell geometry sample (Waterford lugs, Rivendell geometry) is being rebuilt with parts abandoned by customers ... so far it's cost all of $29.00 for a front hub ... still need to build the wheels, so I suspect that the rims and spokes will cost.

The Waterford Track bike was purchased 2nd hand with Gipiemme Pista components.

The Waterford-built stainless steel Interloc cyclocross prototype was purchased 2nd hand with Dura-Ace & XT components ... and is the only bike I own without lugs.

For me, classic bikes are not so much about the components, having never ridden Super or Nuovo Record ... my big thing is lugs and frames. I want my frames to look good ... and I want quality construction.

One of these days, a Richard Sachs will join the collection ...

And perhaps I'll build up a true vintage classic one day. Until then, I'm content to read and learn and absorb from all of you.
