"Sundown Slim" has written a few mystery and alternative-history novels under his real name William Sanders, they all have Native American heroes. The most interesting one is called something like "Into the Wild Blue and Grey Yonder" and is a take on WWI as if the Confederacy and Union were separate and on different sides! David Feldman
