A list member asked how to be sure that you can get a freewheel back together after disassembly. Now, I'm not sure why a rational person with a real life would take apart a freewheel, but I've done it a bunch of times, and maybe my experiences will save you some grief. For the record, most of my disassembly was Suntour ProCompe (often with busted pawls on the tandem) and Regina. IMHO, the secret is the thread...

Here goes:

If the removal tangs aren't damaged, there are a couple of tricks that make disassembly pretty straightforward. I generally do it on a dead hub, but a wheel would do fine. My approach:

--> the lockring/race is LH thread. I usually use a punch to get it started. FW should be horizontal, thread side down. --> Watch for little shim washers below the race. --> After removing the race, put a sieve (say 2 - 3" diameter) up against the fw, and hold it there. Now turn the FW over. With some luck, all the balls from both races will drop out into the sieve. Helps to flush it first with some WD-40 or whatever.

--> The Secret: When ready to reassemble, loop a thread around the pawls to compress them and hold them in place. Twist it one half-turn, and grip the ends, which should be long enough to hold onto after the thing is put together. Use light grease on the inner ball race, and stick the balls to it. Outside of the FW body is down for this manuever. Now, keeping hold of one end of the thread, carefully lower the innards onto the body, being careful not to dislodge the balls.

--> holding everything together, turn it over (outside up) and gently pull the thread. It is helpful to get all of it out... Now install the outer balls in the light grease you have prepositioned, add the shim washers, and screw down the race/locknut.

Ride off into the sunset!
