It's my understanding that if it is being incorrectly pronounced "Saanzhay" ("g" in French being more closely pronounced "zh" rather than "j"), it has been mispronounced in such a manner for 50-ish years.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, there is a classic bike and parts dealer named Grant Handley (he used to own a shop called "Planetary Gear" ... and was commonly confused with Grant Petersen ... in fact, they were often referred to as "Grant" and "the other Grant" ... which was which depended on who you were talking to). Grant H. has apprencticed with the builders of Singer (either that, or Rene Herse, but I believe it's Singer) bikes ... and he pronounces it "Saanzhay".
