Mike, get in touch with the guys at Rivendell Bicycle Works in Cali. Grant Petersen devoted a whole section of the "Rivendell Reader" to the history and application of shellac. Rivendell even sells it. It seems to be very popular with Randoneurs. From what I read, you apply it layer upon layer until you get it the way you want it. It is also worth noting that it does change the color of the cloth a bit. The guys at Rivendell would be better apt to expound on the matter. Good Luck!
