Subject: [CR]More on cotter pins...

CR Group: In my short note on the use of grease or never-sieze compound on crank cotters, I forgot to mention that I never use a hammer or a special tool to install these little guys, except when the VAR tool was available at the shops at which I worked. In fact some, including myself, believe that it is often the use of the hammer that starts the grove in the pin in the first place, not necessarily a loose nut or a pin that hasn't been pulled through far enough, which can also contribute to eventual damage. These things are not made from very hard steel, and the sharp edge of the notch in the spindle, which is harder than the pin, is enough to start that groove in the pin, when a greater force than is necessary, is applied with a hammer.
