My 1936 Caminargent has fully cast, single piece mole, aluminum lugs, produced in multiple batches using the lost-wavx technique. This process was (as you succintly implied) was an extremely high tolerance method of casting that was commonly used in the production of metal-cast (bronze, gold, etc) artwork (sculptures, etc) jewelry (rings, watch cases, etc.)
Investment cast bicycle lugs are produced in a similar fashion to extremely high tolerances. the details of which i will leave to others on thie list (I hope) to describe. I would like to know who came first in this process as it applies to bicycle lug production: Masi, Cinelli, who?
