I don't think that any amount is out of line for an ultra-rare and exotic old part. If people are willing to pay that amount, then that is what it is worth, at least to them. I was not disagreeing with your assessment of the rationality of the price, I was simply pointing out that it is very difficult to judge what any rare collectable is worth. If a given item doesn't come up for sale on a frequent basis (as is the case with the Ideale) then there is no historical market value.

Actually I remember reading something to that effect not long ago. In any case, I'm a big idiot. I was thinking of the Celica. I can't remember car stuff to save my life. If the Corolla was pretty sporty back in the day, it certainly isn't now. But I guess that's another example of how it can be difficult to compare cars year to year. Aside from the quality changes, some models, like the Celica, have changed so much as to be in a different part of the price spectrum.

Ultimately to become the M3!!! The first gen M3, and other cars on the (E34?) platform are supposedly the winningest production cars in sports car racing history. At least that's what the BMW fans say.
