Another comment: Ebay item #1121953894, 'Collectible Campagnolo Rear Derailleur', looks even nicer than the $510 one, and it has a 'buy it now' price of just $275, yet the 3 bidders have only worked it up to $152 with 17hours to go.
Given that there is virtually no chance it will sell for less than $275, I wonder why one of the also-rans from the earlier auction doesn't just, you know, click the button...
Maybe they're all salivating over that Simplex 543, which has the advantage of coming complete with a box!

Well, I'll give the "fool and his money" sermon. As a Francophile, I have bought several complete, nice French bikes, each for less than that derailleur cost. I plan to have some of these at Cirque, and I'll guarantee I'll not trade any of them for a derailleur, no matter how rare. I don't mind anyone spending his money as he wishes, but I think I have the right to believe it is foolish to spend more for one component than for a complete quality classic bike. OK, end of sermon.
