I think the cable would eventually break where it's bent over the edge of the counterbore (if it were on a daily rider)

The red washers are what make me think the cheap wingnuts might be original - if it had the GS "Flying Saucer" nuts originally it wouldn't have those washers, and where else could they have come from?
