hey guys, noticed there have been 49 hits on the chainwheels since i inquired about them. appreciate you all looking. just wondered if there was anyone who recognized some of the logos? one that is on several is the E and W outside what looks to be a knife pointing upwards with a B inside the blade and either a AY AB or AN below depending on the number of teeth. yes the one with the marked 60 is indeed a 60 tooth chainwheel and there was a 64 of the same pattern but on a bike. then there is the one with what appears to be a club and a long shafted labyris crossed with A L R at the top and either a D, O or Q at the bottom. hilary maybe you are familiar with these as most are marked made in england. a couple are marked made in germany but no other markings. many fit the stronglight 49d crank and others the three armed cottered simplex shown. these came from a guy who loved to create his own gearing including putting up to five chainwheels on the front which worked much like half-stepping. couldn't really shift more than two cogs in rear without shifting in front. or maybe a 36t rear, 36t front fixie. made his own frames at times and cobbled together whatever he could find. he always said the only frame alignment tool you really needed was a kitchen table. his bikes always worked superbly no matter what "junk" he had on them. mostly lived out of dumpsters the last years of his life.was known to throw away campag calipers and put centerpulls on his team bikes when he was younger and got paid to race. his last(maybe only) car hadn't been driven in years and was left to rust in the basement. rode every day of his life till struck down about six months before he died. one of those rare souls it was a blessing to have known. and i will think of him everytime i look at one of these chainwheels hanging on the shop walls. peace sarah * every first day of spring should be like this one
