If all you need is a bail out gear, try a 14-34 FW. It will work great with an XT RD. If you want vintage looks you might try an old Rally. I tried a Rally for a while and it was fairly disapointing on a 14-28 as a user, but it sure looked cool.
I prefer to just stand up on the hills. ... keeps my butt from getting sore.
