So this would suggest that those little sidewall extensions do something to stiffen or otherwise strengthen the rim. That aside, I think the wall thickness throughout that little bitty box section is a bit thicker than on a conventional lightweight tubular. Even with the unsupported bead hook, my Open4's and Omega V's stand up to bumps better than GL's. Added bonus is that if they do dent you can often bend the bead hook back into place (more or less).
